Every Fall I make at least one trip back home to buy a bushel or two. This year a friend took me to a market in Clarksburg, Ontario called the Farmer's Pantry. This is my new favourite place to buy apples. You can pick your own or buy them by the bushel. They have lots of great varieties. Our family favourites are Gala and Honey Crisp as well as the apples that grow organically on my friend's property - a variety that we have learned from the Farmer's Pantry is called a 'Snow' apple. My friend and her husband built their family home on a piece of land that had been owned by her grandparents. When she was little, her grandfather had planted some apple trees on the property and when construction began, they were particularly careful to make sure these trees were not disturbed. The result is a number of trees that are still producing organic apples today. Because my friend is unsure of the variety of apple she brought one to the Farmer's Pantry to get the opinion of the owners. The woman we spoke with was so incredibly gracious. She cut a number of different varieties to show us the difference in each one. Her best guess was that the apple was a variety called 'Snow' that would have been a more common variety during the time the trees were planted. It was so interesting and we really appreciated the insight and time Farmer's Pantry took to speak with us about it. We also learned that each apple has a star inside it when cut through the centre width-wise. I love apples!
